“Practicality of the Japanese Language in the United States Army” ($15 + $3.99 Shipping)

This insightful book, spanning the period from November 15, 1941 to January 31, 1962, explores the crucial role Japanese language skills played in the U.S. Army’s success during World War II and beyond.

In World War II, Renold Muranaka joined the linguist team of the 158th Regimental Combat Team (“Bushmasters”), and took part in three amphibious landings, once on Noemfoor Island and twice on Luzon in the Philippines. He translated captured Japanese documents and was awarded the Bronze Star medal. In 1950-1951 during the Korean War, he headed a team of interrogators to join the ROK 5th Inf. Div. and the 7th Inf. Div., and interrogated North Korean POWS in the Japanese language. The information obtained was so valuable to G-2 X Corps that he received his second Bronze Star medal.
